Abstract

In the third quarter of 2012, the desktop PC industry's shipment volume fell short of expectations due to the escalating European debt crisis and the growth slowdown in emerging countries. In late October, Microsoft launched new OS (Operating System) Windows 8, which managed to bolster shipment performance in the short term. However, as Windows 8 features touch control and does not have other major difference between the previous version Windows 7, the benefits of Windows 8 on stimulating consumers' replacement demand are expected to be limited in the long run. Meanwhile, Apple also launched next-generation iMac in the third quarter of 2012, which is likely to be a great threat to AIO (All in One) PCs. Finally, as China announced a subsidy scheme for energy-saving desktop PCs starting from October 2012, the competition between existing desktop PC vendors in the Chinese market is anticipated to intensify.
